Limiting your child's exposure to potentially sensitive content

Earlier this summer, we updated the sensitive content control to allow people to decide how much sensitive content and accounts show up across Instagram's recommendation surfaces.

The control has two options for teens – "standard" and "less". New teens on Instagram under 16 years old will be defaulted into the "less" state. For teens already on Instagram, we will send a prompt encouraging them to select the "less" state.

This will make it more difficult for young people to come across potentially sensitive content or accounts in search, Explore, hashtag pages, Reels, feed recommendations and suggested accounts.

With these changes, we're making it harder for teens to find accounts that go against our Recommendation Guidelines, by showing them lower in search results, and in certain cases, removing those accounts in the results all together.

Our goal is to help young people discover new things to love while supporting age-appropriate experiences on the app.
