FEATURES AND TOOLS

Features and tools dedicated to ensuring families can create and explore in enjoyable, age-appropriate ways.

Appropriate content

Meta Horizon includes information useful for parents to determine what content is right for their child
  • Each world is rated based on their suitability for different ages: ages 10+, ages 13+ or ages 18+. Only people ages 18 and up can see and visit worlds and events rated ages 18+
  • AI non-player characters (NPCs) found in any ages 10+-rated worlds are tested to help ensure age-appropriate responses
  • As a parent or guardian, you can decide what content your child can access
For parent-managed Meta accounts, as parents and guardians, you have the ability to:
  • Control whether your child can download or use an app on Meta Quest or visit a world on Meta Quest, the Meta Horizon mobile app or any browser or other app
  • Approve any purchase requiring a credit or debit card, including the purchase of Meta Credits
  • Permit or deny access to all worlds with a certain rating, or choose what worlds to approve one by one

Dealing with upsetting content online

Contact and interactions

Meta sets clear standards for acceptable behaviour within Meta Horizon through our Code of Conduct for Virtual Experiences, which prohibits people from impersonating others and engaging in conduct or sharing content that may lead them to physical harm. In addition, child and teen protections in Meta Horizon automatically:
  • Limit interactions with people that your child or teen doesn't know
  • Set Meta Horizon profiles to private, so all follow requests need to be approved by your teen, child or you as their parent or guardian
  • Establish a personal boundary – an invisible boundary within worlds that prevents others from coming too close
  • Include voice chat limitations. Parent-managed accounts only hear contacts that you approve, while teens automatically have their voice channel set to people they know within worlds
You and your family also have access to tools such as:
  • Blocking, muting and reporting, with reports reviewed by a combination of technology and trained safety specialists
  • Pause, which lets you all take a moment away from others inside Horizon Worlds and their surroundings
  • Poll to remove so that world participants can remove disruptive people
Parent-managed Meta accounts have:
  • Supervision already enabled
  • The ability for parents to see a list of your child's followers and who they follow
  • The ability for parents to individually approve contacts your child can chat with, call and invite to join
  • Privacy protections that prevent data use for training AI models.
  • The ability for parents to approve or deny access to any world individually or set rules for accessing worlds
  • Access to Communities blocked
With optional supervision for teens, you can:
  • See a list of your teen's followers and who they follow
  • See, adjust and lock worlds safety settings such as voice channel and personal boundary settings
  • Block access to any world and social features such as calls, in-world voice chat or text chat
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Privacy

To support your family's privacy, Meta automatically sets all parent-managed accounts and teens to the following settings:
  • Private profile is on: This means that your child or teen must approve requests to follow them
  • Active Status is set to offline: This means that no one can tell if your child or teen is currently using their Meta Quest or the Meta Horizon mobile app. (Note: People who are using an app experience or world at the same time as your child or teen may be able to see your child or teen's presence in that app or experience.)
Parent-managed Meta accounts further address child privacy by:
  • Auto-generating your child's profile image so that it appears as a grey shadow or outline
  • Giving you as a parent control over privacy settings including activity and active status
With supervision for teens, you can:
  • See if your teen changes their privacy settings
  • See your teen's followers and who they follow

Time management

At Meta, we understand the importance of balancing time spent online with daily life. To help you and your family strike this balance, you have access to the following for parent-managed Meta accounts and teens with supervision:
  • Daily time limit settings for Meta Quest or worlds across all devices including phones
  • Scheduled breaks so that your child or teen can't use their Meta Quest or access worlds during certain days or times
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Meta Quest settings

Meta Quest has built-in safety features designed to help keep families physically safe, such as boundary, which sets up virtual walls that appear when you get too close to the edge of your play area.
Make the experience the most comfortable for your child by choosing between Stationary boundary (staying in place) and Roomscale boundary (moving around) and identify the content that's best suited for their movement and motion preferences by checking the comfort ratings (ranging from comfortable to intense) on all games and apps in the Meta Horizon Store.
In addition to these settings and offerings, we also recommend:
  • Choosing a safe, unobstructed space and clearing the area of any objects before putting on your headset
  • Taking regular breaks as advised in our Health and safety warnings (note that breaks are advised every 30 minutes when starting out and whenever there's any level of discomfort)
  • Allowing time to adjust both to the headset and the specific experience
  • Starting on the more comfortable side of our comfort ratings scale while learning what you like when moving and looking around in an immersive experience
Meta Quest has built-in features that are designed to ensure age-appropriate experiences and promote digital wellness:
  • Daily time limit settings for the Meta Quest headset
  • Web browser content filters which are automatically on for parent-managed accounts
  • Scheduled breaks so that your child or teen can't use their Meta Quest headset during certain days or times
  • All Meta Quest app titles in the Meta Horizon Store must show age and content ratings assigned by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC)
  • By default, parent-managed accounts and teens are blocked from downloading content that is deemed inappropriate for their age
Adding supervision to the Meta Quest experience for teens allows you to:
  • Watch what your teens are doing on their headset from your phone or browser in real time
  • Flag apps or worlds for inappropriate content
  • Implement passcodes to restrict access to certain apps on shared headsets
  • Block your teen's ability to connect their headset to a PC
  • Monitor and understand your teen's use of Meta AI (our intelligent assistant)
  • Ensure that certain content categories such as gambling, weapons and sexual content are automatically filtered from view when your teen accesses the Internet browser on their headset
  • See which apps your teen uses, purchases, downloads or is gifted
  • Approve or deny access to any app individually

Meta Credit management

Meta Credits are digital tokens that can be exchanged for avatar store clothing or accessories and certain premium in-world items in worlds. Meta Credits can be redeemed on Meta Quest and the Meta Horizon mobile app.
For pre-teens (ages 10-12):
  • Preteens aged 10-12 on a parent-managed Meta account cannot purchase Meta Credits directly or manage their own wallet on Meta Horizon.
  • With a parent-managed account, you can proactively purchase packs of Meta Credits and gift them to your preteens, or approve their requests to purchase Meta Credits, which can then be redeemed within the avatar store or in worlds for age-appropriate digital items.
  • Parents can also monitor how Meta Credits are redeemed with supervision by visiting Family Centre.
For teens (ages 13-17):
  • Teens aged 13+ can buy packs of Meta Credits and manage their own Meta Horizon wallet.
  • With supervision on Family Centre, you can receive notifications when your teen purchases Meta Credits (pack size, payment method, date).
  • You can also receive notifications when your teen redeems Meta Credits for a digital item (item name, credit price, date).
  • Parents can buy Quest Cash and send it to their teens, who can then use it to purchase Meta Credits on Meta Quest. Learn more about purchasing Quest Cash.
