Introducing Teen Accounts on Facebook and Messenger
A new, protected experience for teens, guided by parents
Soon, teens on Facebook and Messenger will automatically be placed in Teen Accounts, which have updated settings that limit who can contact them and the content that they see. Teens under 16 will need parental permission to change these settings.
Foster positive online experiences with account features and tools
Enable your teen to confidently navigate the online connections that they're making by learning more about in-app features and tools.
Content and interactions
To keep our technologies safe from abusive behaviour, we monitor policy violations and have measures in place to keep abuse off our services. Settings to help you prevent unwanted contact include:
Blocking someone (on Facebook or Messenger) to prevent unwanted conversations or future interactions
Restricting people (on Facebook or Messenger) to limit the level of visibility and interaction that you have with certain people
Reporting of content or accounts that violate our guidelines and standards
Some protections are automatically enabled. With Teen Accounts, the following audience settings will automatically be set to Friends:
Who can see your future posts, stories or reels
Who can see your friends list
Who can see people, Pages and lists that you follow
Who can see posts that you're tagged in on your profile
Who can comment on your public posts
With supervision enabled, parents and guardians can:
See who your teen's friends and contacts are
See who and what your teen has blocked
See who can message your teen or view their stories
See the people and Pages that their teen has blocked
See reported accounts that your teen shares with you
Meta has ensured that measures are in place to keep abuse off our apps and has developed standards for what is and isn't allowed. Safety features available for all accounts include:
Comment management letting you decide who is able to comment on your Facebook posts
Content filters filtering out any emojis, words or phrases that you (or the community) find offensive on your Facebook Page or post
Audience selector, allowing you to adjust your commenting audience and gain control of a conversation
Review tags to approve or dismiss Facebook posts that you are tagged in before they appear on your profile
Teen Accounts have additional layers of protection. These accounts will:
Automatically filter out more sensitive and potentially offensive content, so you see the content that's the most age-appropriate
With supervision enabled, parents and guardians can:
We encourage teens to manage their time on Facebook and Messenger by enabling them to create boundaries around their use. In an effort to help them manage time, we've implemented features, such as:
